How do I get a library card?
Visit the library’s front desk during open hours with photo identification and verification of current address. Children under the age of 15 will require a parent or guardian to sign for them. You can also register online for a temporary library card. With this option, you can reserve materials, but you must complete registration when picking them up.
Where can I use my library card?
Your library card is useable at Western Allegheny Community Library, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, and all 70+ libraries in the Allegheny County system.
How do I look up to see if the library has an item?
Books, movies, and more may be looked up in the library catalog. Materials are searchable by author, title, subject, or keyword. You are also able to reserve or request items through the catalog.
How do I access my account?
Sign into your online account to see what you have checked out, view your holds, and renew items. You can also request items directly from the catalog, view your past searches, and get personalized recommendations for items you might like.
What types of things can I borrow?
The library offers books, DVDs, music CDs, magazines, and audiobooks for children, teens, and adults, as well as activity kits, board games, tech items, and other special checkouts.
How many things can I check out at a time?

Most materials check out for three (3) weeks. Bestselling adult fiction, magazines, music CDs, and Adult DVDs check out for one (1) week.
Can I have things for longer if I need to?
Most items are set to automatically renew up to six times, as long as there are no holds on them. Exceptions such as hotspots, some tech items, and bestsellers are not renewable and will need to be returned at the end of the initial checkout period.
Where do I return things?
All materials may be returned inside the library or in the outside book drop (with the exception of book baskets or other items too large for the drop). You can also return Western Allegheny Community Library items to any other library in the county system unless otherwise noted.
What if I'm late returning something?
WACL is a "fine free" library, which means all materials owned by, checked out from, or returned to our library will not accrue overdue fines. Individuals that fail to return items will eventually be billed for replacement, but multiple reminder notices will be sent before that happens.
Can I get something from another library?
Materials may be requested from any library in Allegheny County or via Interlibrary Loan from other libraries in the country. Requests may be made through the online catalog or at the library.
